Brown Belt Focus: Sensing and Perceiving Energy | Intent: To live as an energetic being

By the time you reach Brown Belt, the third level of Nia education, you have developed a proficiency in sustaining awareness of your physical body and paying attention to the sensory details of the four realms: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. This level of training explores the experience of living as energy beings, as every experience of sensation in the body is an energy experience.

Brown Belt Principle 1: The Joy of Movement in the Zone, introduces “The Zone,” a place of no thinking, a universe unto itself. The Zone is a state of heightened sensation inside and out, from which you can think with the both the logical mind and the intuitive parts of your being. In The Zone, energy fields are tactile and readily available to you; Brown Belt teaches you how to tap into this energy to make positive changes in each of the four realms of your life. A cinematic pilgrimage to some of the most revered venues and festivals still surviving in Tibet. This poignant journey bears witness to the indomitable faith of its endangered Buddhist community and the imminent threat to its very survival. The vastness of the Tibetan sky, reflecting snowy mountains, rushing rivers, and turquoise lakes, leads the journey west. Tibetans respond to the denial of the human right to practice one’s religion without interference with a defiant devotion. As interviews were not appropriate because of likely retribution, VAJRA SKY employs the evocative voices of Tenzin Choegyal and Dadon, both Tibetans in exile. Many of Tibet’s most legendary musicians and singers are featured in the compelling soundtrack. Watch trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jHGlCTdLyg

Nia 5 Stages is a movement practice based on the five stages of human development: Embryonic, Creeping, Crawling, Standing, and Walking. Practicing the Nia 5 Stages allows your body to naturally reclaim its natural mobility, flexibility, strength, agility, and stability. Like yoga, much of the 5 Stages practice is done on the floor. Nia Founder Debbie Rosas calls the 5 Stages practice of going down to and getting up from the floor a natural fountain of youth. Our focus will be the feet and ankles. First we have a chance to “hang-out” with our feet and ankles – getting in touch with these important foundation points of the body. We learn how our ankles and feet are naturally designed to move, based on their structure. As a result of moving through the 5 Stages with this focus, we find comfortable ways of being on our feet – perhaps for long periods of time – whether working, dancing, running or walking. The workshop will conclude with an abbreviated Nia class.

All of the music is devotionally inspired, much in the kirtan style, Sanskrit prayers and songs from India in addition to original English lyrics. Thus, the new genre of ‘kirtronica’ has been born.

Similar to the the Lost at Last sound, Jaya Lakshmi’s new music is a mixture of house and tribal trance beats, with (recordings of) acoustic instruments like tabla, guitar, flute, and sarod: KIRTRONICA! In the current duo format, she sings live while Ananda runs Ableton Live (an electronic a program). A provocative social experiment-turned-documentary, Kumare follows American filmmaker Vikram Gandhi as he transforms himself into a wise Indian guru, hoping to prove the absurdity of blind faith. Instead, he finds himself forging profound connections with people from all walks of life — and wondering if and when to reveal his true self. Will his followers accept his final teaching? Can this illusion reveal a greater spiritual truth? Winner of South by Southwest’s Audience Award, Kumare is an insightful look at faith and belief. “Incredibly moving” ~ Village Voice Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXUzG6YKuvo

Dr. George Tanabe is a retired UH professor of Religion and currently hosts a TV/radio program.
