Salsa Rueda uses that compelling Latin beat\, yet with similar group dynamics as various folk dances\, such as square dancing or contra dancing. \nA dynamic\, fun-filled dance\, Salsa Rueda de Casino originated in Cuba during the mid to late 1950s. The dance arranges multiple couples into a circle\, or rueda\, which means wheel\, while a “caller” calls out combinations. The combinations can include moves with a partner\, moves between sets of partners/couples\, switching partners\, and moves done as an entire group.  \nDuring this series\, you learn the basic history of the dance form\, some basic calls and combinations (including the hand signals)\, as well as the basic structure and rhythm of this exciting music. Salsa Rueda choreography includes elements from other Cuban dance forms\, such as Guaguanco\, Rumba and Yuka. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Gordon Walker - Rueda 808\n \n \n \n \n \n Beware! And come dance with him if you do! \nBorn in Jamaica\, Gordon can’t recall a time when he wasn’t dancing! His salsa journey began in 2014. Prior to salsa\, Gordon dedicated 12 years to the art of capoeira\, where he honed his sense of movement and physical expression. \nIn 2019\, Gordon found himself in the role of a salsa instructor\, a twist that has allowed him to share his insights and passion for dance. He has taught Salsa Casino and Rueda de Casino at the University of Hawaii at Manoa through the Salsa Dancing at UHM RIO since 2019. Gordon is also a graduate student in Oceanography at the university. \nRueda808 is Gordon’s Cuban salsa performance dance group based in Honolulu. They specialize in Salsa Rueda de Casino. This group takes pride in the cultural diversity\, ethnicities\, and backgrounds of its members\, who include students\, professors\, healthcare professionals\, and other community members. They love dancing in a wheel formation\, getting to know the whole group. Rueda808 dancers are passionate about dancing with aloha a dance form that comes from another island culture!  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

Her classes inspire students to think about dance and life in new\, exciting ways. \nElizabeth grew up in Hawaiʻi and is happy to be home\, dancing in the place she loves\, after more than twenty years of experience performing\, teaching\, choreographing and promoting dance. She has toured France\, Brazil\, Mexico\, and the U.S. with Tennessee Dance Theatre\, Chicago Moving Company\, Lucky Plush Productions\, and Breakbone DanceCo.\, and performed works by Bill T. Jones\, Doug Elkins\, Twyla Tharp\, and Charles Weidman. \nPrior to returning to Hawaiʻi in 2018\, Elizabeth co-founded two dance companies and two regional dance festivals on the continent\, one to promote modern dance in Chicago and one for 7-12th grade dancers and their dance educators in Mississippi. She served as an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM)\, where she taught ballet\, modern\, dance education\, anatomy\, choreography\, and dance theory classes. While at USM\, Elizabeth worked to bridge the Dance and Theatre Departments\, including co-creating a full-length devised theatre work with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and serving as Interim Chair for both departments. She holds a BA in Religion with a concentration in Women’s Studies from Carleton College\, and an MFA in Dance from the University of Washington. \n“Ms. Lentz-Hill has effervescence\, an inner glow\, and an absolute belief in what she is presenting in the studio. There is an indefinable type of energy that leaps from her to her students. These qualities projected not only from Ms. Lentz-Hill but also from the students in the residency as they worked with her. The dancers left her sessions with knowledge of a dynamic energy\, knowing they had something of value to contribute to the community around them so much greater than an ability to be a technically sound dancer. To paraphrase a student in the residency – working with Ms. Lentz-Hill was not just a lesson in technique\, it was a lesson in life! “ – Mid-Pacific Institute \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE
