SUMMARY:Rope Flow Workshop with Dr. Wong Kai Ming • In-person
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 19\, 20252:30 – 3:30 pm HST \nPrice: $39 *includes a personal rope that you can take home \n \n Sign Up Now!\n \n \n \n \n \n Connect your mind and body\, developing agility\, strength\, and balance with Rope Flow! \nStep into this dynamic workshop and connect your mind and body as you harness the power of Rope Flow. Enhance the lower body movement you get in Tai Chi with more upper body exercise that you get from Rope Flow. \nGuided by centrifugal rope physics\, Dr Wong builds on David Weck’s Rotational Movement Training method. This technique encourages proper timing and coordination of rotational body mechanics. \nAs a bonus\, you’ll take home a free personal rope to continue your practice long after the workshop! \nBecome the master of your own movement. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Wong Kai Ming\n \n \n \n \n \n In Dr. Wong Kai Ming’s words\, “Seek only harmony in spirit\, as there is no honor in domination or control\, there is no need to fight unless we allow it emotionally or physically.” Dr. Wong encourages his students to find strength and sensitivity in body mechanics\, proper thought and mindset to support the mind-body systems\, and an open connection to spirit. He embraces transformation of spirit-mind-body relationships\, as an enthusiastic student of the martial arts and various other Asian arts\, such as Fengshui\, study of the I Ching\, and a Japanese form of astrology. \nDr. Wong has been teaching Yang style T’ai Chi Ch’uan over two decades and holds a masters certificate in Chin Na\, under Grandmaster Kam Jun Wai who taught “win without fighting”. Inspired by Taoist and Buddhist influences\, he enjoys applying martial arts concepts to daily life and his medical practice\, observing the benefits of resonating energy modalities as his patients recover from surgery. When challenged\, he blends Eastern and Western disciplines to bring forth truth\, knowledge\, and wisdom \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

SUMMARY:West African Dance Workshop All Levels with Samba Diallo & Hollow Moon • In-person
DESCRIPTION:In-person \nSaturday\, June 28\, 20252:30 – 4:00 pm HST \n$39 for non-members20% Discount Unlimited MembersFree for Hulali\, Malama & Annual Members \n \n Sign Up Now!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Connect to the roots of rhythm with internationally acclaimed choreographer Samba Diallo (@afrofit_bysamba). In this 90-minute\, all-levels West African Dance workshop\, Samba weaves the athletic drills of his AfroFit™ method with signature choreography drawn from Côte d’Ivoire’s village celebrations and National Ballet repertoire. You’ll start with a spine-loosening warm-up\, move through traveling steps that build strength in the hips and core\, and then layer in call-and-response footwork to sharpen your musicality. \nThroughout the class\, Samba shares cultural context—explaining how each rhythm signifies rites of passage\, harvest\, or communal joy—so dancers connect not just with the movement\, but with its meaning. Expect grounded technique and a vibrant sense of community. Modifications are available; both beginners and seasoned dancers will leave feeling inspired and empowered. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Samba Diallo\n \n \n \n \n \n Samba Diallo is an international choreographer\, lecturer\, and fitness innovator whose career bridges the worlds of concert dance and community wellness. As a child\, he often accompanied his father to the theater\, watching in awe from the light booth\, captivated by every performance. Eventually\, whether through curiosity or inheritance\, tango became his greatest passion. Over the years\, he has directed and acted in tango films and traveled the world as a teacher and performer. \nKaru Sanchez brings her own unique depth to tango\, with a background rich in movement\, expression\, and sensitivity to the dance. Her artistry and connection make her a compelling presence on and off the stage. \nIn 2023\, destiny brought Maxi and Karu together. From their very first dance\, they described the experience as flying — the world around them disappeared\, and in a single embrace\, they felt an instant bond. That moment revealed not only a dream partnership in tango\, but also a shared path in life. \nSince then\, Maxi and Karu have danced together across Europe\, performing in countries such as Denmark\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, and Belgium. They also competed together in the Tango World Championship for the first time\, proudly reaching the finals. Now\, they are beginning a new adventure in the United States\, continuing their journey as dance partners and life companions. \nFor Maxi and Karu\, sharing their love of tango — and the subtlety of a true embrace — is a dream come true. \n \n Sign up here\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

She has performed as a dancer throughout the state of Hawai’i as well as Japan\, and after undergoing rigorous training to complete her ‘ūniki ceremony\, graduated as a kumu hula in 2002. \nThe experiences gained throughout the years has led Leimomi to take her education and knowledge to another level: teaching.  \nLeimomi believes that it is valuable to our hula lineage that we bring our true Hawaiian culture of the dance to our students. It is our responsibility as “Keepers of Hula” to grasp what we learned from the teachers before us\, and to continue in this fashion so it will be handed down and enjoyed for generations to come.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

Her classes inspire students to think about dance and life in new\, exciting ways. \nElizabeth grew up in Hawaiʻi and is happy to be home\, dancing in the place she loves\, after more than twenty years of experience performing\, teaching\, choreographing and promoting dance. She has toured France\, Brazil\, Mexico\, and the U.S. with Tennessee Dance Theatre\, Chicago Moving Company\, Lucky Plush Productions\, and Breakbone DanceCo.\, and performed works by Bill T. Jones\, Doug Elkins\, Twyla Tharp\, and Charles Weidman. \nPrior to returning to Hawaiʻi in 2018\, Elizabeth co-founded two dance companies and two regional dance festivals on the continent\, one to promote modern dance in Chicago and one for 7-12th grade dancers and their dance educators in Mississippi. She served as an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM)\, where she taught ballet\, modern\, dance education\, anatomy\, choreography\, and dance theory classes. While at USM\, Elizabeth worked to bridge the Dance and Theatre Departments\, including co-creating a full-length devised theatre work with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and serving as Interim Chair for both departments. She holds a BA in Religion with a concentration in Women’s Studies from Carleton College\, and an MFA in Dance from the University of Washington. \n“Ms. Lentz-Hill has effervescence\, an inner glow\, and an absolute belief in what she is presenting in the studio. There is an indefinable type of energy that leaps from her to her students. These qualities projected not only from Ms. Lentz-Hill but also from the students in the residency as they worked with her. The dancers left her sessions with knowledge of a dynamic energy\, knowing they had something of value to contribute to the community around them so much greater than an ability to be a technically sound dancer. To paraphrase a student in the residency – working with Ms. Lentz-Hill was not just a lesson in technique\, it was a lesson in life! “ – Mid-Pacific Institute \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

A true daughter of the islands\, Doris exudes a vivacious warmth and genuineness for what she loves and believes in. Doris is well-loved for sharing her aloha. Whether in a teaching or ambassador capacity\, Doris lends an infectious enthusiasm. \nDoris took her first dance class at the University of Hawai’i\, where she met now-husband Mark in a ballroom dance class. Hula ʻauwana has been a passion of hers since 2013. Doris humbly aspires to embody the sacred grace and beauty of hula\, and to pass on the love of this cultural treasure. Through his own tumultuous journey of discovering himself vocally and musically\, he empowers you to find your own abilities – no matter how seemingly hidden! \nDustin showed early musical talent. His parents\, both preachers\, somehow scraped together the money to give their young son piano lessons. Yet at some point he lost all faith in his musical ability. After an eventful breakthrough\, Dustin went on to sing and accompany the full gospel choir on keyboard. He eventually toured the nation and spread the joy of music performing for churches\, jails\, and people in hospice. Dustin sang as a backup vocalist at popular concerts by Janet Jackson\, The Winans\, Kirk Franklin\, and Donny McKlerken. See his story here: https://stillandmovingcenter.com/2023/12/letter-from-the-director-vol-126-december-2023/ \nNow\, he finds joy in giving back the magic of music here at Still & Moving Center to students from all walks of life.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

Created especially for Still & Moving Center students to perform at the Pan Pacific Festival 2025 in Honolulu this June\, this piece draws on the deep cultural connections between the Portuguese island of Madeira and the Hawaiian Islands—linked across time and tide through music\, migration\, and the legacy of the ukulele from Portugal. \nWhether you’re a seasoned dancer or just starting out\, your movement\, your story\, and your presence are what will bring this piece to life. You’ll explore Portuguese folk rhythms\, the power of the elements of nature\, and the legacy of cultural exchange—all through a beautifully choreographed contemporary lens. \nCome dance with us. Be part of something meaningful. Sign up today to carry the story forward. \nCongratulations to our 2 Scholarship winners! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica’s showreel of three performances: https://vimeo.com/381404621/767a3e4cd2 \nJessica’s latest professional dance creation: IVY – My Homeless Lover. https://vimeo.com/763607040/b1b9447443 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Eirado Enes\n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Eirado Enes is an Italian-Portuguese Contemporary Dance performer and choreographer whose career has danced across continents\, from Europe to the United States as far as Hawai’i\, for over a decade. Her path has led her to collaborate with companies such as Not Standing/Alexander Vantournhout (Belgium)\, Black Label Movement (US)\, and My Homeless Lover (Italy/Belgium)\, which she co-directs with Edward Oroyan. \nIn Jessica Eirado Enes’ newest work\, MADEIRA\, created specifically for the students of Still & Moving Center to perform at Pan Pacific Festival 2025\, Jessica and her dancers explore the compelling relationship between the volcanic island of Madeira in Portugal and the Hawaiian Islands – distant in geography\, yet mirroring each other in spirit. Rugged cliffs\, fertile soil\, the whisper of the wind through lush canopies\, and the ever-present song of the waves bind them across oceans. But their bond deepens through a shared story – one of migration\, music\, and quiet revolution. \nOn August 23\, 1879\, aboard the English ship Ravenscrag\, three Portuguese emigrants—Augusto Dias\, Manuel Nunes\, and José do Espírito Santo – arrived in Honolulu Harbor with a three-year contract to work on the plantations. Cabinetmakers and musicians\, they carried with them a small stringed instrument known as the machete and the skills to play and craft it. They could not have foreseen the legacy they were about to seed: a four-stringed wonder that would leap into the heart of Hawaiian culture and echo far beyond\, becoming what we now call the ukulele—the “jumping flea”. \nIn MADEIRA\, eight dancers move to early ukulele music\, channeling the raw energy of the elements—earth\, water\, wind\, and fire—that define both island landscapes and their ancient relationships to nature. Jessica’s choreography draws from the pulse of Portuguese folk dances\, stitched together with memories of her avós (grandparents) spinning and stomping at village festivals in the mountains north of Braga\, Portugal.  \nIt is said the machete first came from Braga as the braguinha to Madeira\, Portugal\, and onto Hawai’i. So one of the Hawaiian ukulele’s earliest ancestors came from Braga. How apt that Jessica – a fairly newcomer to Hawai’i\, has predecessors from Braga\, Portugal – just as the ukulele has! \nThis piece is a journey—through memory\, myth\, and migration. A crossing of oceans and eras. A dance of hands that built\, strings that sang\, and islands that\, though far apart\, hum in harmony. \nGet to know a bit more about Jessica by watching a snippet of her dancing in these videos.  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

SUMMARY:Kumu Mālia Helelā & Hālau Nā Hula Ola Aloha Performance at Ala Moana Centerstage
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 19\, 20251:00 – 1:45 pmFREE \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCome to Ala Moana Shopping Center’s Centerstage to cheer on more than 60? 70? of our hula dancers performing for their biggest audience ever.  This community performance will include dancers from all hula classes.  \nWe are very fortunate to have an authentic kumu hula (traditionally-trained hula teacher) with her own halau (hula school) at Still & Moving Center. On April 19\, all her halau members come together to dance both ancient kahiko hula and modern auwana hula.  \nLocated in the heart of Ala Moana Center\, the world’s largest open-air shopping mall\, Centerstage hosts over 800 performances annually\, celebrating the rich tapestry of Hawaiian and global traditions. \nAddress: Ala Moana Shopping Center 1450 Ala Moana Blvd\, Honolulu\, HI 96814 \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Kumu Mālia Helelā \n \n \n \n \n \n Kumu Mālia Ko’i’ulaokawaolehua Helelā strives to live a life of grace. Her halau (hula school)\, which meets at Still & Moving Center\, is Na Hula Ola Aloha. Completing her uniki (graduation) under Kumu Hula Puluelo Park in 2002\, she now teaches hula and oli (traditional Hawaiian chant) to a wide range of students\, from infants and toddlers to kupuna. Mālia studied oli under Kumu Hula Keola Lake. She began her formal training in lomilomi massage as a teenager. She was licensed by the State of Hawaii as a massage therapist in 1998 and as an esthetician in 2002. Her hula practice and lomilomi practice\, she says\, are the same. She continues to look to the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian environment for grounding and inspiration. Mālia has become a respected and beloved cultural practitioner in Hawaii. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Eirado Enes\n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Eirado Enes is an Italian-Portuguese Contemporary Dance performer and choreographer whose career has danced across continents\, from Europe to the United States as far as Hawai’i\, for over a decade. \nJessica’s showreel of three performances:  \nhttps://vimeo.com/381404621/767a3e4cd2 \nJessica’s latest professional dance creation: IVY – My Homeless Lover.  \nhttps://vimeo.com/763607040/b1b9447443 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE
