As a\u00a0kumu hula\u00a0and lomilomi massage practitioner and trainer,\u00a0M\u0101lia looks to the\u00a0\u2018\u0101ina<\/em>, the land, for grounding and inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n

A gifted Hawaiian hula dance teacher, Kumu M\u0101lia simultaneously plays the \u2018ukulele, dances, cues her students\u2019 steps, sings in a lovely voice and translates Hawaiian into English. It\u2019s a wonder to behold and a joy to dance to! Even more importantly, M\u0101lia\u2019s students experience a deep sense of welcome. Preserving the lineage of her teachers, Kumu M\u0101lia grounds her dancing in traditional steps, songs and rhythms, while also composing original Hawaiian songs, chants and choreography. Come experience an authentic Hawaiian hula class, in person or online.<\/span><\/p>\n

M\u0101lia Ko\u2019i\u2019ulaokawaolehua Helel\u0101 strives to live a life of grace. Her hula h\u0101lau<\/em>, or school, named N\u0101 Hula Ola Aloha, meets at Still & Moving Center. Completing her \u2018\u016bniki<\/em> under Kumu Hula Puluelo Park in 2002, she now teaches hula and oli to a wide range of students, from infants and toddlers to elders,\u00a0kupuna<\/em>. M\u0101lia studied\u00a0oli\u00a0(traditional Hawaiian chanting) under Kumu Hula John Keola Lake.<\/span><\/p>\n

M\u0101lia\u2019s<\/span> mother gave baby M\u0101lia<\/span>\u00a0massage from birth. As a teenager, M\u0101lia<\/span>\u00a0began her formal training in lomilomi massage earning her license from the State of Hawaii as a massage therapist in 1998. She teaches that the foundations of hula and lomilomi massage are the same: moving harmoniously with the beautiful Hawaiian environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an ambassador and guest lecturer of Hawaiian culture, Kumu M\u0101lia Helel\u0101 frequently officiates at events and delivers presentations, such as for Leeward Community College, the Hawaii Yoga Institute, Outrigger Reef on the Beach, Mid Pacific Institute, Hawai\u02bbi Pacific University, Manoa Cottage, Honolulu Theater for Youth, Gandhi International Institute for Peace, groups of international middle and high school students, and of course Still & Moving Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

M\u0101lia<\/span>\u00a0became a recording artist in 2020, bringing out her first album. \u201cKeiki Hula Love\u201d consists of original songs for children. She is currently researching and writing a trilogy of historic novels centered on the Kawehewehe and Kalia areas of Waikiki.
