For someone who has trained herself as a \u201cdoer\u201d her whole life, I don\u2019t recall<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-53175f1d-7fff-9307-cecf-9af6de8fec8c\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"251\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/BmELOWRsKPLeyrRz27DPTYLGtCY7R97k1PgZCpCzdrsR58wfkUFDHKORrLHvVhM4ThIXXyyS7XeVv76GZWcT6sqWJONdLl3Y3ZG0kzEsAeCf5FM6mNxJUZcWkE5j5MEJVUWRoSX5JyVZZyNc2DBCg4GW9DvHW4R39r5AVRrCQMdAOwTbMyPf86B1rA\" width=\"188\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: right;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>\u00a0going into a situation with much receptivity. I often enter with a predetermined plan for what I am bringing to the table, for what I am sharing, for what I want to know.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s see what unfolds,\u201d has not typically been my\u00a0<em>modus operandi<\/em>\u00a0in a new context. Perhaps I don\u2019t need to start by asking people a lot of questions, expecting to be given answers. What if I were to enter with a little less self-assertion, a little more humility? How about starting with quiet listening, a gentle openness?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-9e9b6619-7fff-e8f2-f5c2-5a205ce73b93\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"268\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Oxx3IsEGkgTdqwPcPrMqJApHB5hDCvSG2JJ-RGUfjRPDEyNJmvVbxdeqC0K2CVXBafW9mg59vpFCgtRMTxMzlc2pX1_0jNCKg_IWgh0pXDwIalEUwbMY2mvnpjJ3UWE5Weso00fsIIZtkHeJFDw-thI\" width=\"201\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>Before coming to Hawai\u2019i, it would NEVER have occurred to me to ask permission to enter a place.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>So for me, this difference of approach has instigated a huge cultural and life-style turn around. I\u2019m just starting to realize how revolutionary this has been. This more humble approach affects everything, down to the way we touch other people, how we feel our way into conversations, how we test the waters, picking up signals as we go\u2026 rather than brashly charging in.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>To a certain extent, I\u2019m recognizing this tendency as a member of a domineering, accomplishment-oriented culture, educated to<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-18ee0296-7fff-1c69-c000-6de1bc61926f\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/fnWn5lhJm6dRtjJDtYkkKjAAXqN-3a5KLht0cpW8rIHz0-J13FfBOPsZTAqXfnqX2W9NjLXxGnuQqfgpnGRMbnDWNlL1DARuDxsJScH9Dn0EwUis2dfXIC7Eqkl_o6Bx89lFZA_b4d7mClfXTy0NDoPmCBn2-k_NGje3uq_BwKd_JiZ3AWdTGJDt9A\" width=\"308\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: right;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>\u00a0learn through probing inquiry. And I am also acknowledging this as a personal tendency that I\u2019m wanting to learn my way out of.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Another big lesson in receptivity blessed me recently. And it resulted in a startling archeological discovery.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Our family\u2019s company, Prometheus Construction, has been contracted to stabilize the side of a riverbed in \u2018Iao Valley on Maui, a valley in which the highest of Maui\u2019s nobility,\u00a0<em>ali\u2019i<\/em>, lived and were buried for hundreds of years. It\u2019s a lush, stunningly beautiful river gorge beneath the \u2018Iao Needle, a lofty stone spire hurtling upward into the sky.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 20 years in Hawai\u2019i, Prometheus Construction has developed something of an island approach, not just crashing in with a \u201cHere we are and this is what we are doing!\u201d attitude.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-cae19db7-7fff-50ff-fc02-6a97b77ffcd8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/2Kf1Orqzg_YTyFG15kbBbQs92Kf0FCIjT37P-HJlDC6TCJ3zkbzfu1ifP1040XYDj_Ft04jBQnszGyWpBw0IvXISe1Dt3h1beETjEv7lL9RXukKhBIgIFMBslkXqlcm68SNGS_Ays0kJTH2mbuEe_O0\" width=\"274\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>Certainly, approaching this job required us to be receptive to long-held island sensitivities and perspectives. For those of you who may not be familiar with the\u00a0<em>ahupua\u2019a<\/em>\u00a0of ancient Hawai\u2019i, these wedge-shaped land divisions follow the natural watersheds of the islands. Within the\u00a0<em>ahupua\u2019a<\/em>, the traditional Hawaiian community lived and worked together from\u00a0<em>mauka<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>makai<\/em>\u00a0(from the mountain to the sea) farming land crops from the top, down to farming fish at the shore. The highest principle of sustainability for the\u00a0<em>ahupua\u2019a<\/em>\u00a0was protecting their precious watershed.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The first contractor to work on the \u2018Iao Valley job site where we are now contracted to work<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-d1cbeb76-7fff-82af-7a8b-3b91bb162207\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"170\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Pyh_L0VOU6AR4uBfJCzk57jPj3VoAy-6nbOq0lvF3e8t12MHgWHg4UUsl_DaWhwVRfLyKk1l9lXGSQ5DD0M-qgevvn5uNYjImSLgeI6c9775MVVwqqR7yPW5uafqLupVcgFLByRlfo4v33PRYa0XllCN3dUkVXxfBc8xHMRDbRL8OPpE1nOrWcL7Qw\" width=\"128\" class=\"CToWUd\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: right;\" \/><\/strong><span>\u00a0evidently came in and plunked their heavy equipment right into the middle of the \u2018Iao Valley riverbed. Can you imagine how that would have grated on Hawaiian sensitivities? A big, noisy, greasy piece of machinery in a pristine waterway?<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>As the Construction Supervisor for Prometheus, our son Govi made thoughtful plans to perform our work as non-invasively as possible. He had our fabricator create an extra-long arm for our excavator, with a heavy concrete block on the back for counterbalance, so that we could keep our equipment on the top\u00a0<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-eb14950c-7fff-ba02-0d58-075b3671d193\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/iKewBxodu6ssEgUqHLu-GSKP1mGoVomuBWVmEwtP8xKdrz9F8usOS8x2W6zMwurHlAlU5sUyORFdW899CmUkvzvn0V4rin67J9F6QUO7LNe62w5mjY8ekHnDvTcSD4CBZFfXxhHXZQBNeMiLRkJ7lsRkwjuTyy7ai_CE4WzPBHFmJDX2SJbB21RrDw\" width=\"274\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>of the riverbank while drilling long \u201csoil nails\u201d into the side of the river bank to stabilize it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For the morning of the blessing, Govi invited all the relevant public officials and inspectors, as well as the neighbors living immediately below \u2018Iao Valley State Monument where we were working. Most importantly, he invited a local Hawaiian cultural practitioner, in fact, a\u00a0<em>kumu hula<\/em>, to give the blessing ceremony: Kapono Kamaunu.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Cliff and I met Govi at the construction site in advance of our guests\u2019 arrival. We had brought 3<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-aa13bfbb-7fff-e987-0859-c2b1ef8fc25f\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"232\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/PN2-dj9CJV9cqK8K9lwrPfLoz_CQaKbjPsLRdxN2_VRNd0Qut9Xz3WfnJgGNQfAcM8zeb7ZB0NDhSNnv4veZahlmfskdSKhsS5g4rUhXnAwtWes7AWXOzkJw0zuMOJWPZjQBaupfdJ2AXHfH6-Gone-B_V51FcLyT-yaZJ6GyJToIcILL882cp5XZg\" width=\"165\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: right;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>\u00a0maile lei, the traditional Hawaiian fragrant vine-like lei made for special occasions and sacred\u00a0<\/span><span>ceremonies. Govi had large ice chests of cool drinks and plenty of good \u201cgrinds\u201d on hand, without which no island gathering is complete!\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<br \/>Kumu Kapono Kamaunu arrived with a small entourage, including Kahu Kekai Robinson with some of her students and teachers from the\u00a0Hawaiian language and culture immersion school, Ke Kula \u2018O Pi\u2019ilani. As it turns out, she was the only one in attendance whose ancestors come from \u2018Iao Valley &#8211; her participation graced our ceremony.\u00a0Our\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0for the day thoughtfully surveyed the venue for the best location to hold the blessing, choosing a circular area adjacent to our job site. This was not to be a formulaic event. He would adapt it to the needs of the moment as he perceived them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-41ab71a0-7fff-e8c0-0d54-a8d580759b76\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/BO5B2EnQgjkfP0uRVnGwLGyUci86uHqTxRaHFBhjDZhd8GKVkdvzkFUBw6W81y-lmEr-73-T8rdlv01F98SMCHA0tL0qW-0ZgLVOeZ36wQWQzQc3faNZXjnzDZCaYcwHeM16i0TIF53Y0pSOhabAJf0RlMg1KrRJHCjSh1SrkkqUgrZ7__DGlsaVKw\" width=\"600\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>After sounding a conch shell in the four directions, our\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0asked Kahu Kekai to give an\u00a0<em>oli,<\/em>\u00a0a Hawaiian chant, asking permission to enter. Her sonorous voice echoed up the sides of the valley, reverberating through our skin, our bones. The\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0later commented on how the sun came out from behind the clouds just as her\u00a0<em>oli<\/em>\u00a0ended. Our request for permission to enter the site had been granted. Watching Kekai herself, Cliff noticed that after giving her powerful chant, Kekai slipped back into an attitude of humility. Perhaps humility is a requirement for receptivity. Being humble\u00a0<em>(ha\u2019a)<\/em>\u00a0allows us to get out of our own way, doesn\u2019t it?<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>As one of the teachers from Kahu Kekai\u2019s school explained to me after the ceremony, listening for the voices of the\u00a0<em>\u2018aina,<\/em>\u00a0the land, is something his people do continually. He was standing with one of his slippers off, so that he could better \u201chear\u201d with his foot what the land had to say. He explained how they listen for signals all the time. A fierce, sudden wind springing up will cause him to pause what he\u2019s doing, while a soft, gentle breeze (both of which are the subject of many Hawaiian songs, chants and hulas) will invite and encourage him to continue, to move forward.<\/span><br \/><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-8f7b5598-7fff-1d62-2383-facecbfb0096\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/zdedYaHfuD0Jqp0rZxbQSw4ixuGtUARrOtzG2fEDiK1tet6snZ9t8Gzd4j2subeMjHskfiR67_7y_IRqyYmNT9Oxv0Q7w8-TE7V5tWi39Vbdazzw8FYVuVazYtKXZwf7eemN5z_grPkThpWIQsbhf3PHNU_BYCF0FG5VJfxMRChV_R-A-GBp0b92oQ\" width=\"600\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: right;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Now for the ceremony itself, our\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0had a surprise for us, asking Kahu Kekai\u2019s school children and their teachers to set up a pounding board for making traditional\u00a0<em>kapa<\/em>\u00a0(tapa cloth). The children and adults of the school then played a percussive piece, with one teacher and one student pounding the\u00a0<em>kapa<\/em>\u00a0board and the others rhythmically pounding special sticks together. The\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0now called upon all the ancestors and living beings of the valley to listen to the pounding sound of good work being done in the valley again.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Kumu Kapono later told me about his realization driving home from work the day before: the<\/span><span>\u00a0valley and all the beings in the valley needed to hear the sound of good work again. Even though our construction pounding was going to be much louder than the pounding of\u00a0<em>kapa<\/em>\u00a0cloth, the intent should be the same: to perform good work. To me this was an instance of receptivity on his part: wanting the job to go well, wanting to give an appropriate blessing ceremony to help that happen, and being open to inspiration in crafting his blessing. In this way he came upon this brilliant, unique approach.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0now spoke to all of us gathered there, and in particular to all our co<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-49c8fdcc-7fff-4c75-a920-c0d9a6d1ee69\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"242\" src=\"https:\/\/ci5.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/6dEO9aLYm0bTVTqtyIAQr2jzI9ruqZorDgg_P5NbC0A7qeDbG-dq5YjJHfScmqLpRxhNKXmUc98_KZRUskmh2oU6ULly_DzHXQds7REbOEYdbI5xPoCEQwuFvFzbigaLyUsqO9nc7tbvA97pS1p_Z0A-vXAgZg=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/4d46db59debe462c1496e41ab\/images\/a6560d98-d897-1c65-eb1e-0f9de49d0af1.png\" width=\"400\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>nstruction workers who were going to engage in this rigorous and potentially dangerous work. He talked about the historic, sacred, and energetically powerful location at which we were standing. He went on to explain the different Hawaiian energy centers\u00a0<em>(piko)<\/em>\u00a0in the human constitution, from the crown of the head to the feet. And he advised each person to take 5 minutes at the start of the workday and 5 minutes at the end to clear their minds and find the calm center within themselves. In so doing, they would protect themselves to safely move through their day.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>As the president of Prometheus Construction, I thanked the\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0for his blessing, assured him and all who were assembled that our family and company feel honored to work at this historic site, that our intention is to respect and preserve the valley, and that I trust our workers will take the time to follow his recommendation at the beginning and end of the day.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>After asking Govi to fetch water from the river in a koa wood bowl, the\u00a0<em>kumu<\/em>\u00a0mixed salt from the<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-aed9f564-7fff-b4a8-4a4c-2eebbc6843c2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/6lDbgw61k9XX1yVbLSAlmTXOO8JpJs4ulV6v6DAZVxgEBjR3CM6-65O1GFKF5BhDDxaz1Sc0q3gQWWXSlHNtVLYLonjE0bbHzd4Ow-auhpXUfKtLdstHdhKZmYpJiFuF8w7Uwd1ddww0x9rysUl-LFI\" width=\"286\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: right;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>\u00a0sea with the fresh water, then used the protective leaf of a ti plant to sprinkle the surrounding area and all the participants with blessings, all while chanting in Hawaiian. Still wearing the maile lei we had given to him, he next asked Kahu Kekai and our son Govi to each take a lei and hang it symbolically over two distant fence posts, representing, it seemed, the two ends of our job site. At Cliff\u2019s request, he allowed Govi to use the remaining ceremonial water to bless our equipment.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Meanwhile, Kahu Kekai was hanging her lei when the curious discovery was made. And yet, as she humbly hung the maile lei over the fence post, her eyes connected with a sight she had never taken in before, something from the distant past.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span><strong><em>To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable \u2013 that is Aloha.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>-Queen Lili\u2019uokalani<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"adm\">\n<div id=\"q_512\" class=\"ajR h4\" data-tooltip=\"Hide expanded content\" aria-label=\"Hide expanded content\" aria-expanded=\"true\">\n<div class=\"ajT\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"im\">\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>She had found an ancient Hawaiian\u00a0<em>k\u014dnane<\/em>\u00a0game board carved into a stone &#8220;table&#8221;\u00a0with a stone bench on either side of the \u201ctable.\u201d Like chess,\u00a0<em>k\u014dnane<\/em>\u00a0is a game of strategy. Looking at it, one can almost imagine two young\u00a0<em>ali\u2019i<\/em>, aspiring warriors battling their pieces of coral and lava rock across the board under the watchful eye of an elder warrior. Now, this game table with seats is an<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-710662d0-7fff-4a9e-e0a5-06d8475e79cd\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/qsuelgLksWLCgqE2ys_akxnKc68MpW2j-CdhBhY8xXC2jEAq-Qf8t384FOlDvcYYPgwfG9r1kD1kwlFNgm5TBE1F6WLcVK1cSN9b84ujWtu2oyZkLoCLUWiUTqIAPmPR4CAC21x_Lxe361Rk2TKslJ8IjwiudLzaGCQVWmBCIEpyVtzsYbNnO1oGWg\" width=\"300\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: right;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><span>\u00a0archeological rarity hardly ever found, even when someone is looking for them. \u00a0And this one was nestling right next to a fence Kekai had stood at dozens or hundreds of times. In this sacred context, she seemed to have opened an exceptional receptivity to see something she had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>Govi built a protective enclosure around the\u00a0<em>k\u014dnane<\/em>\u00a0stones the next day. \u00a0As it turns out, the day of the blessing &#8211; before we began our work &#8211; might have been the last chance for finding the stones. Govi says that these culturally precious stones lie so close to our job site, they would have certainly been covered by the concrete spray called \u201cshotcrete\u201d that we will be using to reinforce the riverbank.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>There was the archeological treasure, waiting to be found before it was encased in concrete, and there was humble, receptive Kekai, asking as she always does, for permission to enter the valley, open to the answer, open to perceiving what was there, waiting to be seen before it disappeared from sight.<br \/>\u00a0<\/span><strong id=\"m_-4422001047878589496docs-internal-guid-421be04c-7fff-ce8c-1390-5840429bd1b6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/ElN0mWtJXJ_KDzBWXcZzyAvK-q4BJgkY7tliKpoVQ-vrUJBXBGt77RJBFkOuBp6zueMIjfZzzYXm9glibMuD1kafGDpRjptQrw3C7sL9zrZYz95DqN7zARMm5AR7wAuMDiqtC89CSPRuM-W2rtDLcaBMcSsQaqd1nDwi_dI5fHHTrtOUtv1NwBfwAQ\" width=\"249\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" data-bit=\"iit\" style=\"float: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" \/><\/strong><br \/><span>Touched by this experience in \u2018Iao Valley, I know that I will not change my lifelong tendency\u00a0<\/span><span>overnight. Yet just the fact that I was present at the blessing might be an indication of moving in the right direction. Yet when I asked Cliff whether we had a blessing set up for the \u2018Iao Valley job, and he replied, \u201cYeah! Govi set one up for tomorrow morning\u201d, I&#8217;d hopped onto the plane with him to be in attendance, somehow knowing that I just had to be there. I\u2019m so grateful that I was. I want to become more receptive, more perceptive. I want to hearken to those inner\/outer promptings.
