By Doris Morisaki

If you joined us for Still & Moving Center’s first Performing Arts Collective on June 26th, you may have been surprised to learn that Audi Nodado was performing publicly on guitar for the very first time. His gentle playing created the melodic foundation for “Hanalei Moon,” but guitar is only one expression of this talented and endlessly curious artist.

Audi’s journey to Hawaiʻi has been anything but ordinary. Born and raised in the Philippines, Audi moved to the United States at 18 and built a life filled with constant learning and reinvention. He started as a delivery driver, became a dental lab technician, and later entered the world of technology just as computers were transforming the workplace. From working with mainframe computers and punch cards to developing applications and adapting to new innovations, Audi spent his career embracing change.

After retirement, Audi and his wife Patricia finally made their way to Hawaiʻi, a dream they had carried since early in their marriage. The move gave Audi the space to explore the creative passions that had always lived within him, especially photography and painting.

When Patricia discovered Still & Moving Center and began taking classes, Audi became her supportive partner, often pausing his painting to drive her to class. Sometimes he would wait in the Lyrical Lobby, simply enjoying the atmosphere. But eventually, Still & Moving drew him in too.

His first experience with hula kahiko changed everything. What began as a simple invitation to try something new quickly became a meaningful practice. Later, Kumu Mālia encouraged him to try ʻauwana hula, and Audi discovered another form of storytelling through movement.

“I feel like I’m meditating as I’m dancing,” Audi shares. “There is so much depth to the movement.”

Watching hula now feels different to him. He sees the stories, emotions, and intentions behind each gesture in a way he never noticed before. His passion has even turned into a playful household debate, as he and Patricia sometimes find themselves discussing the “correct” choreography after class. His humor, curiosity, and kindness have made him a beloved hula brother in the community.

When asked what they love most about Hawaiʻi, Audi doesn’t hesitate.

“It’s the friendliness of the people. Everyone has the ʻaloha bug.’ There is really no other place like it. It’s truly a blessing to be here.”

I asked Audi what life would look like without Still & Moving Center, and he laughed while admitting one thing: his painting has taken a back seat to hula. But watching him move, connect, and continue challenging himself, it’s clear that he has found something even more valuable.

For Audi, Still & Moving is more than a place to take classes. It’s a place to grow, discover, and belong.

“We are in the right place,” he says. “It’s perfect.”

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/b7efb2d5-dd58-197e-b254-b2c760627a19-scaled.jpeg” title_text=”audi nodado” show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_1292.jpeg” title_text=”audi nodado” show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_4691-1-scaled.jpg” title_text=”audi nodado” show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_6631-scaled.jpeg” title_text=”audi nodado” show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/IMG_3787-scaled.jpg” title_text=”audi nodado” show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||0px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/DSC5444.jpg” title_text=”audi nodado” show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”30px||0px||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

By Doris Morisaki If you joined us for Still & Moving Center’s first Performing Arts Collective on June 26th, you may have been surprised to learn that Audi Nodado was […]

[et_pb_section fb_built="1" custom_padding_last_edited="on|tablet" admin_label="Header" _builder_version="4.16" background_color="#f9f6f5" background_image="https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/trans-shiva.png" background_size="contain" background_position="top_right" custom_margin="3px||||false|false" custom_padding="26px||0px|||" custom_padding_tablet="60px||||false|false" custom_padding_phone="" da_disable_devices="off|off|off" locked="off" global_colors_info="{}" da_is_popup="off" da_exit_intent="off" da_has_close="on" da_alt_close="off" da_dark_close="off" da_not_modal="on" da_is_singular="off" da_with_loader="off" da_has_shadow="on"][et_pb_row column_structure="3_5,2_5" use_custom_gutter="on" gutter_width="2" custom_padding_last_edited="on|desktop" _builder_version="4.17.4" width="100%" max_width="1706px" custom_margin="-1px|auto||auto|false|false" custom_padding="0px|60px|0px|60px|true|true" custom_padding_tablet="30px|20px|30px|20px|true|true" custom_padding_phone="" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="3_5" _builder_version="4.16" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" text_text_color="#000000" text_line_height="2.4em" header_3_font="santana||||||||" header_3_font_size="32px" width="95.5%" custom_margin="3px|-685px|1px||false|false" custom_padding="1px|0px||||" hover_enabled="0" global_colors_info="{}" sticky_enabled="0"] By Renée Tillotson with Doris Morisaki

Most of us knew Shaoshu Jiang as a precise, masterful Latin dancer who carried himself with immaculate poise and flair. We couldn’t miss the chemistry he shared with his partner Monique. With their snap, their flourish, and their professional sass, they riveted our attention. During their many cha-cha-cha and rumba performances across our Barefoot Ballroom floor, we watched them spin, shimmy, glide, and dip with sparkling execution. For his exquisite synchronization with his beautiful partner and to the music – that’s how many of us knew him.

For some of us at Still & Moving who’d known him longer, he was also a warm presence, seeking us out in a crowd to say hello and to give a hug. He’d be overjoyed to see us if we crossed paths in town. He left fanfare behind when he left the dance floor, re-assuming something of a friendly, tech-nerd persona. Very endearing.

Originally from China, a few of us first met Shaoshu when he zoomed into our Satsang conversations from where he was living in Seattle - probably in 2020. As we all read the inspiring quotes for the week in the Still & Moving Center Almanac, Shaoshu’s eager mind would always come up with questions I had never considered. Then he and I would both listen attentively to answers I had never given before! Hah! Not content to let statements of philosophy remain theoretical, Shaoshu was always eager to know how someone would live such ideas in daily life. When I’d ask, he always offered perspectives from his rather progressive Chinese upbringing, and we’d seek to integrate many points of view from around the world.

Shaoshu moved to Honolulu with something of a lonely heart, knowing that he would at least find community here with us and with our mutual Still & Moving friend Miku Lenentine. As he evolved into a steadfast member of the Still & Moving ’ohana (family), Shaoshu gave more than he ever took. We always knew that an event of ours would be a great hit if Shaoshu and Monique showed up to teach, demo, or perform!

Those of us who knew and loved him feel deprived of a light extinguished long before we would ever have wanted, as if a shadow is passing deeply through our being. We weren’t expecting it from such vibrant young man.

We will miss all that you gave for the love of dance and friendship, Shaoshu. Mahalo nui loa for your elegance, your radiant smile, your curiosity, and your warm, beautiful heart.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="2_5" _builder_version="4.16" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_image src="https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_6654-scaled.jpg" title_text="shaoshu" show_bottom_space="off" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" custom_margin="30px||0px||false|false" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src="https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Shaoshu-Monique-Merry-23.jpeg" title_text="Shaoshu & Monique - Merry '23" show_bottom_space="off" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" custom_margin="30px||0px||false|false" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src="https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_0280-scaled.jpg" title_text="shaoshu" show_bottom_space="off" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" custom_margin="30px||0px||false|false" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src="https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/IMG_4106.jpeg" title_text="Latin Dance" show_bottom_space="off" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" custom_margin="30px||0px||false|false" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src="https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/DSC01965-scaled.jpeg" title_text="shaoshu" show_bottom_space="off" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" custom_margin="30px||0px||false|false" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src="https://stillandmovingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/IMG_6684.jpg" title_text="shaoshu" show_bottom_space="off" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" custom_margin="30px||0px||false|false" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
[125,143

post-34527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-letter-from-the-director","category-magnificence-in-our-ohana
