Children who participate in hula halau (school) receive one of the best introductions to Hawaiian language and culture. Kumu M\u0101lia teaches the basic moves of both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula auana (modern hula), as well as oli (Hawaiian chanting). Keiki (children) also learn a true appreciation for nature and how to make flower lei. As students progress through the halau, they learn to use hula implements, such as the ipu (gourd drum), \u2018ili\u2018ili (stones), and pu\u2019ili bamboo sticks.<\/p>\n

This series is geared towards keiki who are new to taking formal classes. Kumu M\u0101lia\u2019s warm and inclusive style of teaching ensures that each keiki (child) feels right at home. This 30 minute class includes hula basics as well as hula dances that are fun and engaging.<\/p>\n

Families are welcome and encouraged to observe the class as we take frequent hug breaks.<\/p>\n

M\u0101lia is an authentic Kumu Hula: a recognized hula teacher, officially having graduated after 17 years training from her teacher, Pulu\u2019elo Park. Fluent in Hawaiian, Kumu M\u0101lia frequently composes her own original oli (sacred chants). Kumu M\u0101lia has an affinity for teaching young children. For the last decade she has developed lessons specific to infants, toddlers and preschool aged keiki. She also enjoys sharing classic hula and songs with the elderly. In keeping with her tradition, she is an observant and reverent student of nature and keeper of the land \u2013 the \u2018aina.<\/p>\n
