All are welcome to come learn and dance at this pre-Hanukkah Israeli Folk Dance. The Hawaii Israeli Recreational Dance group is delighted to share these dances with us, making them accessible to people of all experience levels. Watch this fun video here!<\/p>\n

Israeli folk dance (also known as Israeli recreational dance) was created as a way of bringing peoples of different backgrounds together in joyful celebration. Most of the dances can be danced by young and old, and celebrates the pioneering spirit. Major folk influences include the circular Hora, which is originally a Romanian folk dance form, the Temani, Atari, the Hasidic (Eastern European Jewish) dance tradition, and other Eastern European folk dance traditions. There are many debka-type Israeli folk dances; the debka is originally an Arabic folk dance form of the Middle East.<\/p>\n

These dances helped create a new Israeli culture in the land of Israel, combining elements from other dance cultures with the music and themes of modern Israel. Israeli folk dancing is a popular recreational activity in Israel and has also spread over time to other countries around the world<\/p>\n

Israeli dancing began in Honolulu in the 1970\u2019s. Hawaii Israeli Recreational Dance is a non-profit group officially incorporated in Hawaii in 1999. The members have taken great pleasure in joining the international community of Israeli Dance both by going to mainland workshops and by bringing choreographers and well-known teachers here.<\/p>\n

Experienced teachers Ellen Spielvogel and Fran Margulies, who have done Israeli dance for decades, primarily lead the group at this point, helped by Rachel Ahuvia, our resident Israeli. Rachel also leads HORA!, a small and dedicated performing group active for the last ten years in community and synagogue festivals.<\/p>\n
