This series is perfect for preschool aged <\/span>keiki <\/span><\/i>(kids), and those learning to navigate a more structured class setting. This half hour class incorporates storytelling and hula implements to engage your keiki\u02bbs attention. Families are warmly welcome to attend class, as we take regular hug breaks!<\/span><\/p>\n

Young children seem magnetically drawn to Kumu M\u0101lia. She\u2019s full of laughter and magically engages their attention and imagination. She has produced her own album of Hawaiian songs for children called \u201cKeiki Hula Love\u201d, many of which the children learn and perform in her series.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participation in this hula <\/span>h\u0101lau<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>school) is one of the best introductions to Hawaiian language and culture. Children will learn both hula <\/span>kahiko<\/span><\/i> (ancient hula) and hula <\/span>\u02bbauwana<\/span><\/i> (modern hula), with the basic steps as well as<\/span> oli<\/span><\/i> (Hawaiian chants). Children will learn a true appreciation for nature, as well as how to make flower lei. Some classes may learn to use implements, such as the <\/span>ipu<\/span><\/i> (gourd drum).<\/span><\/p>\n

The clusters of white flowers – Papa Kukui – adorning kukui trees well represent our tiny 3-4 year <\/span>keiki<\/span><\/i>. The kukui nuts, also known as candle nuts, when burned provided an herbal remedy for keiki and a light source to ancient Hawaiians. Likewise, the flower of the candle nut tree, the Papa Kukui, eventually develops into a source of light – just as these little ones will provide light in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kumu M\u0101lia imparts a genuine enthusiasm for learning as well as a deep appreciation of nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

M\u0101lia is an authentic Kumu Hula: a recognized hula teacher, officially having graduated after 17 years training from her teacher, Pulu\u2019elo Park. Fluent in Hawaiian, Kumu M\u0101lia frequently composes her own original <\/span>oli<\/span><\/i> (sacred chants).\u00a0 Kumu M\u0101lia has an affinity for teaching young children.\u00a0 For the last decade she has developed lessons specific to infants, toddlers and preschool aged <\/span>keiki <\/span><\/i>(kids). She also enjoys sharing classic hula and songs with the elderly. In keeping with her tradition, she is an observant and reverent student of nature and keeper of the land \u2013 the <\/span>\u2018aina<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kumu M\u0101lia Ko\u2019i\u2019ulaokawaolehua Helel\u0101 strives to live a life of grace. Her <\/span>h\u0101lau <\/span><\/i>(hula school), which meets at Still & Moving Center, is Na Hula Ola Aloha. Completing her <\/span>uniki<\/span><\/i> (studies) under Kumu Hula Puluelo Park in 2002, she now teaches hula and <\/span>oli <\/span><\/i>(traditional Hawaiian chant) to a wide range of students, from infants and toddlers to <\/span>k\u016bpuna <\/span><\/i>(elders). M\u0101lia studied <\/span>oli<\/span><\/i> under Kumu Hula Keola Lake. She continues to look to the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian environment for grounding and inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n
