Her path has led her to collaborate with companies such as <\/span>Not Standing\/Alexander Vantournhout <\/span><\/i>(Belgium), <\/span>Black Label Movement<\/span><\/i> (US), and <\/span>My Homeless Lover<\/span><\/i> (Italy\/Belgium), which she co-directs with Edward Oroyan.<\/span><\/p>\n In J<\/span>essica Eirado Enes\u2019<\/b> newest work, <\/span>MADEIRA<\/i><\/b>, created specifically for the students of Still & Moving Center to perform at Pan Pacific Festival 2025, Jessica and her dancers explore the compelling relationship between the volcanic island of Madeira in Portugal and the Hawaiian Islands – distant in geography, yet mirroring each other in spirit. Rugged cliffs, fertile soil, the whisper of the wind through lush canopies, and the ever-present song of the waves bind them across oceans. But their bond deepens through a shared story – one of migration, music, and quiet revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n On August 23, 1879, aboard the English ship <\/span>Ravenscrag<\/span><\/i>, three Portuguese emigrants\u2014Augusto Dias, Manuel Nunes, and Jos\u00e9 do Esp\u00edrito Santo – arrived in Honolulu Harbor with a three-year contract to work on the plantations. Cabinetmakers and musicians, they carried with them a small stringed instrument known as the <\/span>machete <\/span><\/i>and the skills to play and craft it. They could not have foreseen the legacy they were about to seed: a four-stringed wonder that would leap into the heart of Hawaiian culture and echo far beyond, becoming what we now call the <\/span>ukulele<\/span><\/i>\u2014the “jumping flea\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n In <\/span>MADEIRA<\/i><\/b>, eight dancers move to<\/span> early ukulele music, <\/span>channeling the raw energy of the elements\u2014earth, water, wind, and fire\u2014that define both island landscapes and their ancient relationships to nature. Jessica\u2019s choreography draws from the pulse of Portuguese folk dances, stitched together with memories of her <\/span>av\u00f3s<\/span><\/i> (grandparents) spinning and stomping at village festivals in the mountains north of Braga, Portugal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is said the <\/span>machete<\/span><\/i> first came from Braga as the <\/span>braguinha <\/span><\/i>to Madeira, Portugal, and onto Hawai\u2019i. So one of the Hawaiian ukulele\u2019s earliest ancestors came from Braga. How apt that Jessica – a fairly newcomer to Hawai\u2019i, has predecessors from Braga, Portugal – just as the ukulele has!<\/span><\/p>\n This piece is a journey\u2014through memory, myth, and migration. A crossing of oceans and eras.
