This series is perfect for 5 & 6 year old <\/span>keiki <\/span><\/i>(kids) learning to navigate a more structured class setting. This half hour class incorporates storytelling and hula implements to engage your <\/span>keiki\u02bbs<\/span><\/i> attention. Families are warmly welcome to attend class, as we take regular hug breaks with parents!<\/span><\/p>\n

Young children seem magnetically drawn to Kumu M\u0101lia. She\u2019s full of laughter and magically engages their attention and imagination. She has produced her own album of Hawaiian songs for children called \u201cKeiki Hula Love\u201d, many of which the children learn and perform in her series.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participation in this hula <\/span>h\u0101lau<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>school) is one of the best introductions to Hawaiian language and culture. Children will learn both hula <\/span>kahiko<\/span><\/i> (ancient hula) and hula <\/span>\u02bbauwana<\/span><\/i> (modern hula), with the basic steps as well as <\/span>oli<\/span><\/i> (Hawaiian chants). Children will learn a true appreciation for nature, as well as how to make flower lei. Some classes may learn to use implements, such as the <\/span>ipu<\/span><\/i> (gourd drum).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kumu Hula <\/span>M\u0101lia Helel\u0101<\/span><\/h3>\n

M\u0101lia is an authentic Kumu Hula: a recognized hula teacher, officially having graduated after 17 years training from her teacher, Pulu\u2019elo<\/em> Park. Fluent in Hawaiian, Kumu M\u0101lia frequently composes her own original oli<\/em> (sacred chants).\u00a0 Kumu M\u0101lia has an affinity for teaching young children.\u00a0 For the last decade she has developed lessons specific to infants, toddlers and preschool aged keiki<\/em>. She also enjoys sharing classic hula and songs with the elderly. In keeping with her tradition, she is an observant and reverent student of nature and keeper of the land \u2013 the \u2018\u0101ina.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Kumu M\u0101lia Ko\u2019i\u2019ulaokawaolehua Helela strives to live a life of grace. Her h\u0101lau<\/em>, which meets at Still & Moving Center, is N\u0101 Hula Ola Aloha<\/em>. Completing her \u2018\u016bniki <\/em>under Kumu Hula Puluelo Park in 2002, she now teaches hula and oli<\/em> to a wide range of students, from infants and toddlers to kupuna. M\u0101lia studied oli<\/em> (traditional Hawaiian chant) under Kumu Hula Keola Lake. She continues to look to the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian environment for grounding and inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n
