This year\, we are extending the celebration all through May. Join our hālau – our school of hula – Nā Hula Ola Aloha\, and celebrate Lei Day through music and dance. Kumu Malia’s hula dancers will make your heart sing! \nMālia’s students range in age from preschoolers in keiki hula\, to mixed age kahiko students\, to the gracious ladies in our Aloha Hula Classes. Dancers on May Day will perform in both the traditional kahiko and modern ‘auana hula styles. \nAttendees are encouraged to wear lei to the event. Completing her uniki (graduation) under Kumu Hula Puluelo Park in 2002\, she now teaches hula and oli (traditional Hawaiian chant) to a wide range of students\, from infants and toddlers to Kūpuna. Mālia studied oli under Kumu Hula Keola Lake. She began her formal training in lomilomi massage as a teenager. She was licensed by the State of Hawaii as a massage therapist in 1998 and as an esthetician in 2002. Her hula practice and lomilomi practice\, she says\, are the same. She continues to look to the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian environment for grounding and inspiration. Experience the influence of Hawaii’s natural environment that Lomilomi acknowledges and honors in its healing practices. This training provides you with an appropriate foundation in lomilomi to use either within the family or in a spa setting. All are welcome to attend\, a massage license is not required. This 16-hour training will provide a well-rounded introduction to Hawaiian lomilomi. \nSCHEDULE \nDeepen into your lomilomi over the course of three consecutive days. You are specially invited to participate in a sunrise cleansing ceremony with Kumu Māliaʻs hālau (school of hula).  \nSaturday\, May 23 \n\n6:00 – 8:00 AM: Beach Session (Details provided upon registration)\n10:00 AM – 4:00 PM: Session at Still & Moving Center\n\nSunday\, May 24:  \n\n9:00 AM   – 12:00 PM + 1 Hula\n\nMonday\, May 25:  \n\n9:00 AM – 4:30 PM\n\nKumu Mālia has developed a unique style of bodywork over 30 years of practice. Her Puana Lomilomi method blends practices from the hula\, lei-making\, and lomilomi traditions. Her style of massage is kind and firm and addresses the whole person with the intention of settling the nervous system.  \nThe Puana Promise establishes a framework of the essential components of Puana Lomilomi. Each 16 hour training will provide the following outcomes:  \n1) Presence – Students will cultivate the embodied focus of a lomilomi practitioner\, grounded in body\, mind and spirit. \n2) Prayer – Students will learn Hawaiian prayers associated with healing\, demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and chanted prayers\, and – for this training – participate in a Hawaiian sunrise cleansing ceremony. \n3) Orientation – Students will compare motifs in Hawaiian prayers of healing to anatomical terms and consider the role of time in lomilomi treatments.  \n4) Permissions – Students will safeguard their practice by setting clear expectations of the treatment\, gaining clear and informed consent\, and utilizing secure draping to provide comfort and reassurance. \n5) Landscape of the Body – Students will recognize the influence of Hawaiʻiʻs natural environment to its healing practices \n6) Palpation – Students will refine their palpation skills with a variety of exercises. \n7) Techniques – Students will utilize lomilomi techniques (individually and in sequences) on their own bodies and others. \n8) Rhythm – Students will learn basic hula (steps and hand motions) and recognize ways that hula reflects and supports the practice of lomilomi. \n9) Lomi for the Back – Students will demonstrate proficiency in lomilomi for the back\, and recognize the significance of the spine. \n10) Tools of the Trade – Students will demonstrate proficiency in utilizing a wide variety of tools and equipment to cultivate a space of healing. \n11) Lomi for the Limbs – Students will demonstrate proficiency in lomilomi for the front and backs of the arms and legs. \n12) Resilience – Students will recognize traits of resilience that are passed down in family lineages and identify ways of supporting their clientʻs wellbeing of mind\, body and spirit. \n13) Lomi for the Trunk – Students will demonstrate proficiency in lomilomi for the abdomen\, chest and shoulders. \n14) Considerations – Students will identify common contraindications and demonstrate the ability to adapt and modify lomilomi to suit individual needs. \n15) Lomi for the Head – Students will demonstrate proficiency in lomilomi for the head and neck. \n16) Systems – Students will recognize patterns of healing and practice opening and closing protocols. \nThe course introduces you to hands-on lomilomi techniques from the first lesson on\, so come prepared to practice.
