Created especially for Still & Moving Center students to perform at the Pan Pacific Festival 2025 in Honolulu this June\, this piece draws on the deep cultural connections between the Portuguese island of Madeira and the Hawaiian Islands—linked across time and tide through music\, migration\, and the legacy of the ukulele from Portugal. \nWhether you’re a seasoned dancer or just starting out\, your movement\, your story\, and your presence are what will bring this piece to life. You’ll explore Portuguese folk rhythms\, the power of the elements of nature\, and the legacy of cultural exchange—all through a beautifully choreographed contemporary lens. \nCome dance with us. Be part of something meaningful. Sign up today to carry the story forward. \nCongratulations to our 2 Scholarship winners! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica’s showreel of three performances: https://vimeo.com/381404621/767a3e4cd2 \nJessica’s latest professional dance creation: IVY – My Homeless Lover. https://vimeo.com/763607040/b1b9447443 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Eirado Enes\n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Eirado Enes is an Italian-Portuguese Contemporary Dance performer and choreographer whose career has danced across continents\, from Europe to the United States as far as Hawai’i\, for over a decade. Her path has led her to collaborate with companies such as Not Standing/Alexander Vantournhout (Belgium)\, Black Label Movement (US)\, and My Homeless Lover (Italy/Belgium)\, which she co-directs with Edward Oroyan. \nIn Jessica Eirado Enes’ newest work\, MADEIRA\, created specifically for the students of Still & Moving Center to perform at Pan Pacific Festival 2025\, Jessica and her dancers explore the compelling relationship between the volcanic island of Madeira in Portugal and the Hawaiian Islands – distant in geography\, yet mirroring each other in spirit. Rugged cliffs\, fertile soil\, the whisper of the wind through lush canopies\, and the ever-present song of the waves bind them across oceans. But their bond deepens through a shared story – one of migration\, music\, and quiet revolution. \nOn August 23\, 1879\, aboard the English ship Ravenscrag\, three Portuguese emigrants—Augusto Dias\, Manuel Nunes\, and José do Espírito Santo – arrived in Honolulu Harbor with a three-year contract to work on the plantations. Cabinetmakers and musicians\, they carried with them a small stringed instrument known as the machete and the skills to play and craft it. They could not have foreseen the legacy they were about to seed: a four-stringed wonder that would leap into the heart of Hawaiian culture and echo far beyond\, becoming what we now call the ukulele—the “jumping flea”. \nIn MADEIRA\, eight dancers move to early ukulele music\, channeling the raw energy of the elements—earth\, water\, wind\, and fire—that define both island landscapes and their ancient relationships to nature. Jessica’s choreography draws from the pulse of Portuguese folk dances\, stitched together with memories of her avós (grandparents) spinning and stomping at village festivals in the mountains north of Braga\, Portugal.  \nIt is said the machete first came from Braga as the braguinha to Madeira\, Portugal\, and onto Hawai’i. So one of the Hawaiian ukulele’s earliest ancestors came from Braga. How apt that Jessica – a fairly newcomer to Hawai’i\, has predecessors from Braga\, Portugal – just as the ukulele has! \nThis piece is a journey—through memory\, myth\, and migration. A crossing of oceans and eras. A dance of hands that built\, strings that sang\, and islands that\, though far apart\, hum in harmony. \nGet to know a bit more about Jessica by watching a snippet of her dancing in these videos.  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

She sings and plays ʻukulele while dancing hula\, inspired by the example set by her teacher.  \nBorn to Japanese parents in Hawaii\, Doris grew up speaking both Japanese and English. A true daughter of the islands\, Doris exudes a vivacious warmth and genuineness for what she loves and believes in. Doris is well-loved for sharing her aloha. Starting from her years working at Hilton Hawaiian Village\, Doris loves to share every good thing her island home has to offer. Whether in a teaching or ambassador capacity\, Doris lends an infectious enthusiasm. \nDoris took her first dance class at the University of Hawai’i\, where she met now-husband Mark in a ballroom dance class. Hula ʻauwana has been a passion of hers since 2013. Steadily absorbing hula with our kumu hula Mālia Helelā has increased Doris’ love of the dance\, and correspondingly\, her desire to learn the Hawaiian language. Doris humbly aspires to embody the sacred grace and beauty of hula\, and to pass on the love of this cultural treasure. She gives liberally of her hula talents and knowledge.  Hula continues to make her a better person as it is imperative to dance with a pure heart and joyful smile. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

There is an indefinable type of energy that leaps from her to her students. These qualities projected not only from Ms. Lentz-Hill but also from the students in the residency as they worked with her. The dancers left her sessions with knowledge of a dynamic energy\, knowing they had something of value to contribute to the community around them so much greater than an ability to be a technically sound dancer. To paraphrase a student in the residency – working with Ms. Lentz-Hill was not just a lesson in technique\, it was a lesson in life! “ – Mid-Pacific Institute \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

She has performed as a dancer throughout the state of Hawai’i as well as Japan\, and after undergoing rigorous training to complete her ‘ūniki ceremony\, graduated as a kumu hula in 2002. \nThe experiences gained throughout the years has led Leimomi to take her education and knowledge to another level: teaching.  \nLeimomi believes that it is valuable to our hula lineage that we bring our true Hawaiian culture of the dance to our students. It is our responsibility as “Keepers of Hula” to grasp what we learned from the teachers before us\, and to continue in this fashion so it will be handed down and enjoyed for generations to come.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

As a child\, he often accompanied his father to the theater\, watching in awe from the light booth\, captivated by every performance. Eventually\, whether through curiosity or inheritance\, tango became his greatest passion. Over the years\, he has directed and acted in tango films and traveled the world as a teacher and performer. \nKaru Sanchez brings her own unique depth to tango\, with a background rich in movement\, expression\, and sensitivity to the dance. Her artistry and connection make her a compelling presence on and off the stage. \nIn 2023\, destiny brought Maxi and Karu together. From their very first dance\, they described the experience as flying — the world around them disappeared\, and in a single embrace\, they felt an instant bond. That moment revealed not only a dream partnership in tango\, but also a shared path in life. \nSince then\, Maxi and Karu have danced together across Europe\, performing in countries such as Denmark\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, and Belgium. They also competed together in the Tango World Championship for the first time\, proudly reaching the finals. Now\, they are beginning a new adventure in the United States\, continuing their journey as dance partners and life companions. \nFor Maxi and Karu\, sharing their love of tango — and the subtlety of a true embrace — is a dream come true. \n \n Sign up here\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

SUMMARY:Palena Workshop: A Hawaiian Perspective on Mapping Your Life Path with Kumu Mālia Helelā. In-person & Online
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nLast Sundays of the month \nSunday\, July 27\, 2025 \n5:00-6:30 pm HST \nPrice: $2920% off unlimited membersFree for Hulali\, Malama & Annual Members \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Let’s gather together to visualize your life path from a Hawaiian perspective. In this workshop\, we explore the Palena\, the boundaries or protected spaces\, of your unique life map. \nWhat is Palena? \nBased on Hawaiian values\, Kumu Mālia visualizes the concept of Palena as a heart-shaped island map representing our life. Somewhat akin to various ‘life wheels’ used in self-help and life-coaching practices\, this island contains eight districts\, symbolically representing eight aspects of our life. This Palena framework for looking at any given topic or  situation provides the onlooker with a view that is both more expansive and more in-depth.  \nKumu Mālia’s deep immersion in Hawaiian language\, culture and history\, as well as her experience in hula\, lomilomi and as a mother of four\, have together inspired and informed her symbolic Palena outlook. See how the Palena perspective brings clarity to the way you understand life. \nWhat to expect: \nCome prepared for thoughtful introspection\, journaling\, and optional discussion. All writing material will be provided. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sign Up Schedule\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Kumu Mālia Helelā\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Kumu Mālia Ko’i’ulaokawaolehua Helelā strives to live a life of grace. Her hālau (hula school)\, which meets at Still & Moving Center\, is Nā Hula Ōla Aloha. Completing her ‘ūniki (graduation) under Kumu Hula Pulu’elo Park in 2002\, she now teaches hula and oli (traditional Hawaiian chanting) to a wide range of students\, from infants and toddlers to kupuna. Mālia studied oli under Kumu Hula Keola Lake. She began her formal training in lomilomi massage as a teenager. She was licensed by the State of Hawaii as a massage therapist in 1998 and as an esthetician in 2002. Her hula practice and lomilomi practice\, she says\, are the same. She continues to look to the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian environment for grounding and inspiration. Mālia has become a respected and beloved cultural practitioner in Hawaii. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE

SUMMARY:Bharatanatyam showcase with Viraja & Shyamjith Kiran. In-person
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 5\, 20257:00 – 9:00 pmPrice: Sliding Scale $15 – $100\n Combo Deal: Attend the Performance on Sept. 5 + the Workshop for just $45 \n \n Sign Up Now\n \n \n \n \n \n \nFor the first time in Hawai`i nei\, the Still and Moving Center presents Viraja and Shyamjith Kiran. \nViraja Mandhre & Shyamjith Kiran are a dynamic dancer couple trained in Bharatanatyam Indian Classical Dance from the illustrious Kalakshetra Foundation\, Chennai. Both of them have previously been a part of the Kalakshetra repertory company taking up major roles and also taught as part time faculty at their alma mater. They have had the rich experience of working with legends in their field like the Dhananjayans and Leela Samson. The duo has also been trained in Kathakali under their guru Sadanam Balakrishnan. Involvement with these gurus\, Kalakshetra and their independent pursuits has enabled them to perform at various prestigious venues world over. Some of their critically acclaimed works include Pareekshana\, Mudivil Oru Aarambam\, Svam\, Aham\, Rekha\, Eeram and Samaagati. \nUnder the auspicious gaze of Shiva Nataraja\, they will present a one-of-a-kind Bharatanatyam showcase\, capturing both the history and the zeitgeist of this expressive\, rhythmic dance form. Their choreographies explore more traditional themes from Hindu mythology and legends\, while also bringing holistic reflection to the arts spaces of today. The performance weekend will include a general audience workshop for those interested in exploring the forms\, stories\, and essences of Indian classical dance. No experience or training is required\, and the workshop will be accessible to all ages and movement levels. \nIf you do have some training in Bharatanatyam\, there will also be closed workshops for those with Beginner\, Intermediate\, and Advanced levels of experience. For more information\, please contact janani.laks@gmail.com \n \nA Message from Viraja and Shyamjith: \nAttainment is not as important as longing to attain. Through rigor and learning\, we experience longing itself and it unfolds new treasures as we seek our paths. Along the way\, it is the people we meet\, the places we travel to\, and the laughter we share\, that define and redefine our ideas of success and failure. We create because we do not want to be complacent. Allowing the mind to wander and enjoying uncertainty as it finds form and expression. As performers\, choreographers and teachers we are constantly aware that we are part of a continuum. The essence of what we have received needs to be shared. \n\n \n Sign Up Now\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Viraja and Shyamjith Kiran\n \n \n \n \n \n Viraja and Shyamjith Kiran are a Bharatanatyam dancer duo trained at the prestigious Kalakshetra Foundation\, Chennai\, where they completed their postgraduate studies in 2009. \nA Message from Viraja and Shyamjith: \nAttainment is not as important as longing to attain. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Viraja and Shyamjith Kiran\n \n \n \n \n \n Viraja and Shyamjith Kiran are a Bharatanatyam dancer duo trained at the prestigious Kalakshetra Foundation\, Chennai\, where they completed their postgraduate studies in 2009. Both have performed extensively with the Kalakshetra repertory\, taking on lead roles in the works of Rukmini Devi\, Leela Samson\, Sheejith Krishna\, and others\, touring internationally and teaching at their alma mater. Shyam has also taught at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society\, while Viraja was recognized as Best Outgoing Student at Kalakshetra. \nTogether\, they continue to perform\, choreograph\, and teach as independent artists\, with appearances at venues worldwide including New York\, Paris\, London\, Singapore\, and Chennai. Empaneled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and graded artists with Doordarshan\, they also train in Kathakali\, Kalaripayattu\, and yoga\, bringing depth and versatility to their practice. Their work has been featured in leading publications such as The New York Times\, Financial Times\, and The Hindu. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Get the Still & Moving App\n \n APPLE APP STORE\n \n GOOGLE PLAY STORE
