Immerse yourself in learning a Hawaiian lomilomi massage practice that is unique in all the ways that Hawai’i itself is unique. Experience the influence of Hawaii’s natural environment that Lomilomi acknowledges and honors in its healing practices. This training provides you with an appropriate foundation in lomilomi to use either within the family or in a spa setting. All are welcome to attend, a massage license is not required. This 16-hour training will provide a well-rounded introduction to Hawaiian lomilomi.

Kumu Mālia has developed a unique style of bodywork over 30 years of practice. Her Puana Lomilomi method blends practices from the hula, lei-making, and lomilomi traditions. Her style of massage is kind and firm and addresses the whole person with the intention of settling the nervous system.

The Puana Promise establishes a framework of the essential components of Puana Lomilomi. Each 16 hour training will provide the following outcomes:

Deep Presence – The embodied focus of the practitioner, grounded in body, mind and spirit, and attentive to Akua, the environment, the ancestors, the practice, the receiver, and the self

Prayer & Protections – The intentional use of words and tone to ground the mind and spirit in the body, settle the nervous system, cultivate awareness & establish protected spaces

Observation & Orientation – The gathering and organizing of observations using frameworks for anatomical, geographical, and celestial orientation

Permissions & Assessment – True consent that is essential for establishing rapport and cultivating relationships of trust that allow practitioners to properly assess and plan effective treatments

Landscape of the Body – The anatomy and physiology of the human body as reflected in geological features of the Hawaiian islands

Palpation & Perception – Various unique and personal methods of perceiving, on all levels, including skilled palpation with authentic presence

Techniques & Sequences – Lomilomi techniques and sequences, performed with and without oils, that include compression, vibration, percussion, gliding, and kneading techniques

Lomi for the Back – Introducing practitioner touch with lomilomi techniques and sequences for massaging the back, with an appreciation of the spine as a symbol for genealogy

Lineage & Resilience – An exploration of inherited historical, cultural, and physiological trauma, healing, and growth

Lomi for the Limbs – Lomilomi techniques and sequences for massaging the limbs, approached from both segmented and whole perspectives, and with a focus on the appendicular skeleton that includes the arms, legs, and all related joints

Movement & Medicine – An exploration of rhythm, resonance, and flow in lomilomi and other Hawaiian practices such as hula, including an introduction to the medicinal uses of Hawaiian plants

Lomi for the Torso – Lomilomi techniques and sequences for massaging the front of the torso (abdomen and chest), with a focus on developing trust

Systems & Coherence – A focus on smooth integration of an entire lomilomi session, and viewing the human body, one’s lomilomi practice, and one’s life from a systemic and cohesive perspective
