5-Day Shin Somatics® Training: Dance, Somatic Yoga, Bodywork

Shin Somatics® identifies the techniques of Eastwest Somatics Institute. Professor of Dance, Sondra Fraleigh, founded Eastwest Somatics Institute in 1990 to foster community and train somatic teachers and therapist. Human development from infant to individual infuses Shin Somatics®.

Eastwest Somatics is an approved school of the International Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA)

Graduates of Eastwest qualify for the designation Registered Somatic Movement Therapist RSMT and Registered Somatic Movement Educator RSME through ISMETA.

Kay Nelson

 

Kay Nelson is the Assistant Director of Eastwest Somatics Institute, she organizes, facilitates, and teaches yoga workshops locally and around the world. She has also served as the Director of Therapies and Community Events at both Red Hills Wellness Center and Zion’s Way Healing Arts Center. For over a decade, Kay has owned her own practice as a full-time massage therapist, craniosacral therapist, and Somatic Movement Practitioner. Licensed through Yoga Alliance, she is certified to teach yoga, meditation, and somatic movement exercises. In addition, she has trained as a Life Coach and enjoys assisting others with tools that will support them in achieving their life goals.

 

Catherine A. Schaeffer

 

Catherine A. Schaeffer is an educator, choreographer, published author, and yogi. She has danced with a dozen professional dance companies in New York City, Baltimore, Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Phoenix. A prolific choreographer, her work has been presented in national and international venues, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Scotland. Catherine founded and directed two dance companies and has taught for numerous studios and universities. She began her full-time university teaching career in the dance program at Mercyhurst University, PA (1995-1999), and subsequently became a tenured full-professor at Valdosta State University in GA. At VSU, she spearheaded the development of the BFA Dance Degree program, and earned the university’s prestigious “Excellence in Teaching” Award. (2001-2015)

Schaeffer holds an MFA in Dance from Arizona State University, an EdM in Dance from Temple University, and a BS in Art Education from Kutztown University. She is an ISMETA registered somatic movement therapist and educator (RSMT, RSME) a Registered Yoga Teacher, and teacher for the Eastwest Somatics Institute.Her Yoga Alliance credentials include E-RYT 500 and YACEP.

Recently returning to her native PA, Catherine teaches yoga and dance for theDance Theater of Wilkes-Barre,Mountain Yoga Studio, and Wilkes University. She continues to create and perform somatic based dances, produce art, and offer Shin Somatics® Yoga teacher trainings.

 

Sondra Fraleigh is an international leader in dance, yoga, and healing arts. She Is a Registered Feldenkrais® teacher, and certifies Registered Somatic Movement Educators and Therapists through ISMETA, International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association. She has been a professor of dance and somatics for over forty years in the Department of Dance at the State University of New York at Brockport and is a valued mentor to dancers and somatic practitioners in the USA, Europe, Japan, the Mexico and India.

For more than 30 years, Professor Sondra Fraleigh has been a leader in the study of movement and dance. She is a Fulbright Scholar and professor emeritus of the State University of New York, College at Brockport, where she chaired the Department of Dance. Her innovative choreography based in somatics and inspired by butoh has been seen on tour in America, Germany, India, the UK, and Japan. She served as president of the Congress on Research in Dance (renamed, Dance Studies Association) and as a Faculty Exchange Scholar for the State University of New York. Her articles have been published in texts on dance and movement, philosophy, somatics, and developmental psychology.

Eastwest Institute features Shin Somatics® – an approach to healing and personal transformation developed by Sondra Horton Fraleigh through her teaching of dance and movement, integrative bodywork, philosophy, and meditation. Her work is informed by her certification in the Feldenkrais® Method and CranioSacral Therapy – as also her study of Myofascial Release, Effective Communication, Japanese Butoh, Yoga, and Zen meditation.
