5:00 – 6:30 PM
Experience the energy, movement, rhythm, and powerful sound of Japanese taiko drumming in this beginner-friendly workshop with Michael Gonhata. Participants will learn basic hitting technique, stance, and introductory patterns while exploring the dynamic musical expression of taiko.
Perfect for first-time participants, as well as those looking for a fun refresher course and a chance to reconnect with the fundamentals in a supportive and energetic environment. Whether you’re completely new to taiko or returning to the basics, this workshop offers an engaging introduction to the art form and a foundation for future learning. No experience necessary.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable athletic attire suitable for movement. Clean rubber-soled tabi (jikatabi) or non-slip socks are recommended, but not required. Taiko can be physically active and loud, so earplugs are also encouraged for those sensitive to sound.
Michael (Mikey) Gonhata is an accomplished taiko performer and instructor known for his graceful yet powerful playing style and expressive, fluid arm motions. A former performing member of Nihon Taiko Dojo and student of Kiyonari Tosha Sensei, with over 35 years of taiko experience, he has taught and performed internationally in Japan, Europe, and Canada, as well as throughout Hawaii and the United States. Through his teaching, performance, and ongoing artistic work, he is dedicated to sharing and continuing the traditions of Japanese taiko and musical arts while emphasizing an approach to playing that brings out the natural voice and resonance of the drum. He is the director of Manoa Taiko, an instructor with Taiko Center of the Pacific, and a member of Mikans, a modern Japanese folk trio, bringing together tradition, movement, and contemporary musical expression.
