Participating in this hula halau (school) is one of the best introductions to Hawaiian language and culture. Children learn both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula auwana (modern hula), with the basic steps as well as oli (Hawaiian chants). Children learn a true appreciation for nature, as well as how to make flower lei. May Day – Lei Day Performance on Saturday May 13, 2017.
Mālia is an authentic Kumu Hula: a recognized hula teacher, officially having graduated after 17 years training from a hula halau (school) of a long and esteemed Hawaiian hula lineage. In over a decade of teaching her own halau, Kumu Mālia counts as her students dozens of hula teachers throughout Japan as well as many hula dancers in Hawaii. Fluent in Hawaiian, Kumu Mālia frequently composes her own original oli’s (sacred chants). Kumu Mālia is the originator of the Sitting Baby Hula program, the choreographer of numerous hulas in both the ancient and modern forms, as well as being the repository of myriad traditional hulas, oli’s and general Hawaiian cultural knowledge. In keeping with her tradition, she is an observant and reverent student of nature and keeper of the land – the ‘aina.
