Hawaiian lomilomi massage is unique in all of the ways that Hawai’i is unique. Lomilomi acknowledges and honors the influence of Hawaii’s natural environment on its healing practices. This training provides a foundation in lomilomi that is appropriate for use within the family or in a spa setting. All are welcome to attend, a massage license is not required. This 16-hour training will provide a well-rounded introduction to Hawaiian lomilomi.
SCHEDULE:
This twice-weekly series is unique in that students will be learning and applying lomilomi techniques over the course of one month. The shorter sessions provide lessons in a smaller, and more digestible format.
ABOUT:
Kumu Malia has developed a unique style of bodywork over 25 years of practice. Her Puana Lomilomi method blends practices from the hula, lei-making, and lomilomi traditions. Her style of massage is kind & firm and addresses the whole person with the intention of settling the nervous system.
The Puana Promise establishes a framework of the essential components of Puana Lomilomi. Each 16 hour training will provide the following outcomes:
1) Presence – Students will cultivate the embodied focus of a lomilomi practitioner, grounded in body, mind and spirit.
2) Prayer – Students will learn Hawaiian prayers associated with healing and demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and chanted prayers.
3) Orientation – Students will compare motifs in Hawaiian prayers of healing to anatomical terms and consider the role of time in lomilomi treatments.
4) Permissions – Students will safeguard their practice by setting clear expectations of the treatment, gaining clear and informed consent, and utilizing secure draping to provide comfort and reassurance.
5) Landscape of the Body – Students will recognize the influence of Hawaiʻiʻs natural environment to its healing practices, the significance of the skeletal system in lomilomi, and will study basic anatomy in English and Hawaiian.
6) Palpation – Students will refine their palpation skills with a variety of exercises.
7) Techniques – Students will utilize lomilomi techniques (individually and in sequences) on their own bodies and others.
8) Rhythm – Students will learn basic hula (steps and hand motions) and recognize ways that hula reflects and supports the practice of lomilomi .
9) Lomi for the Back – Students will learn lomilomi specific to the back, and recognize the significance of the spine.
10) Tools of the Trade – Students will demonstrate proficiency in utilizing a wide variety of tools and equipment to cultivate a space of healing.
11) Lomi for the Limbs – Students will demonstrate proficiency in lomilomi for the front and backs of the arms and legs.
12) Resilience – Students will recognize traits of resilience that are passed down in family lineages and identify ways of supporting their clientʻs wellbeing of mind, body and spirit.
13) Lomi for the Trunk – Students will demonstrate proficiency in lomilomi for the abdomen, chest and shoulders.
14) Considerations – Students will identify common contraindications and demonstrate the ability to adapt and modify lomilomi to suit individual needs.
15) Lomi for the Head – Students will demonstrate proficiency in lomilomi for the head and neck.
16) Systems – Students will recognize patterns of healing and practice opening and closing protocols.
Hands on lomilomi techniques will be introduced from the first lesson, so come prepared to practice. All materials and equipment will be provided for you.
