World Culture

World Culture at Still & Moving Center

Whenever you walk through our doors or find your way online with us, you enter a space of global citizenship at Still & Moving Center. We honor you, no matter what part of the globe you may hale from. With the concept of aloha from Hawaiian Culture as our guiding principle, we do our best to put that friendship, goodwill, and love into every interaction with you.

As a cultural center in Hawaii and online, Still & Moving Center actively seeks out teachers and teacher trainers from the world’s many mindful movement practices and mind still practices, such as Meditation, enlightening conversation and Sacred Sound. You’ll regularly find here: Hula and Ukulele from Hawaii, Yoga and Bollywood dancing from India, Qigong from Korea, the Feldenkrais Method from Israel, Tai Chi from China, ELDOA Method from France, Turkish Belly Dance, and Afro Dance! Keep your eyes open and you’ll find here special workshops, trainings and performances from around the world… perhaps Samba or Capoeira from Brazil? Bharata Natyam dance from Sri Lanka or South India? A Contemporary Dance teacher from Belgium?

We may seem to occupy a small space on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, yet Still & Moving Center has served as a cultural center and hub for the world since we opened in 2011. A cultured person is a person of learning. Inspired by the Institute of World Culture, Still & Moving Center cultivates and serves lifelong learners through Hula, yoga, and world wisdom traditions. For that reason, the people you will meet here at Still & Moving Center have traveled, come from different backgrounds, or explored the world of thought as well as movement. As a cultural center in Hawaii and online, we commit ourselves to lifelong learning for the sake of body, mind and soul. We are kind, accepting, welcoming and generous spirited.

Our annual Still & Moving Center Almanac provides quotes from everyone from the Dalai Lama to Dolly Parton… and everyone in between, from Saint Francis, to Rumi, Maya Angelou, Abraham Lincoln, Helena Blavatsky, and beyond. You can learn in the Almanac when the Berlin Wall came down, or when the 13th Amendment freed American slaves, or when the first photograph of a star was taken. And you have a chance to converse on deep themes in both our Saturday conversations called Gems from the Wisdom Traditions and our Sunday Satsang sessions.

Culture is about celebration! We actively celebrate Easter, May Day is Lei Day, Diwali (the India festival of lights), Gandhi’s birthday, and the Winter Solstice, and many other events as they arise, such as the Whales for World Peace Project. Culture entails community, friendship and family –‘ohana, as we say in Hawaii. And we celebrate all of these with you in joy, every day! Join our cultural center in person and online today.
