What is Nia?
Nia, or non-impact aerobics, is a health and fitness practice that was started in the 1980s. The purpose of this fitness alternative is to lower the impact that common strength training and aerobic exercises have on the body in an effort to be gentler on the body, while still getting a beneficial workout. Nia is a fun combination of martial arts, modern dance, and yoga, accompanied by music. This practice challenges not only the physical body, but also the mind and spirit, making for a holistic fitness approach. Those who partake in Nia will receive an effective cardiovascular workout that will increase strength, agility, mobility, and flexibility, without the heavy impact that other forms of exercise have on the body. Nia is most commonly practiced barefoot and empowers people of all different ages, shapes, and sizes by connecting the mind, body, and spirit.
