Leaps in the air, working out battle scenes, a sobbing princess — it all happens here. Weekly rehearsals are underway. An assortment of characters gather, learn their cues, cross swords, and steal our hearts. You will be dazzled by their performance November 6, 2026, the Ramayana reenactment at the Hawai‘i Theater.
At the end of a day, each person arrives from their own walk of life, merging their talents to re-create The Epic Tale of the Ramayana, a 15 year Diwali tradition at Still & Moving.
After nearly every energetic rehearsal everyone gathers with hungry bellies to share a meal. What’s special about this time is not only the magic of all the hands and hearts that create the delicious offerings, but the unifying atmosphere of these late evening pow-wows.
Early on a request came in from a wise cast member for nourishing food rather than just bulk, fast convenient snacks. “Food is my love language,” says Narrator and Director, Doris. She noticed a change of attitude, an increase of gratitude at rehearsals. “Spending time eating together increases the bond between us. Food really unifies us,” Doris says.
Depending on her schedule, Doris brings or cooks something simple and delicious for a shared dinner downstairs. Jade, playing Sita, makes a special tea. Andrea, playing Ravana, bakes a healthy desert or concocts a healing herbal tonic for all to hydrate.
One by one, people grab a plate and find a seat in the Still & Moving lobby. Jade (Sita) and Deeshen (Ram) often facilitate the conversation. “What’s one thing you’ve always dreamed of coming true?” Inspirational conversation. “What for you has been the most satisfying part of being in this play?”
In the coming weeks the wider cast of performers will begin rehearsing with the core characters. The joyful conversations and friendships will continue to grow.
The fruits of this labor of love will be a feast for our ears, eyes, and imaginations on Friday evening, November 6th, when the theater doors open and the curtains part.
