Sound Healing/Gentle Yoga Benefit for the Popolo Project with Bryan Jordan & Robin Shepard

February 24, 2023, @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm HST

The Pōpolo Project is a Hawai‘i-based nonprofit organization that redefines what it means to be Black in Hawai‘i and in the world through cultivating radical reconnection to ourselves, our community, our ancestors, and the land, changing what we commonly think of as Local and highlighting the vivid, complex diversity of Blackness.

We envision a just future for Hawai‘i, achieved by investing in the intersections of our diverse histories and cultures to build connections across communities.  By making the lives of Black folks visible among what we commonly think of as Local, the Pōpolo Project highlights the vivid, complex diversity of Blackness.

Our work redefines what it means to be Black in Hawai‘i—and in turn what it means to be Black in the world—by creating spaces and opportunities for our people to radically reconnect to ourselves, our communities, our ancestors, and the land.

We produce educational and cultural learning opportunities, host community gatherings, and create original media that create new narratives for and about Black people, rooting our experiences and identities in a lush ecosystem of knowledge and kinship.

Music, Art, and Activism Movement presents: Sound Healing/Gentle Yoga Benefit for The Pōpolo Project with Bryan Jordan & Robin Shepard

Welcome to our monthly Benefit Sound Bath Series! My mission behind creating this series is to bring more peace to the community and to the world. It is designed to fill you with serenity, and healing that you can spread throughout your community, while at the same time spreading awareness and helping nonprofit organizations throughout Hawai’i continue their amazing work. In celebration of Black History Month I am thrilled to feature The Pōpolo Project.

About this event

This Gentle Yoga/Sound Healing event is designed to help bring a little peace, and comfort into your life.

Robin will guide the first half of the session with a gentle yoga routine set to the crystal singing bowls to encourage relaxation and prepare you for a deeper meditation. Robin’s sense of curiosity has led her to create a unique style of yoga that is dynamic and personal, allowing each student to explore sensation, and find space and range on their own terms. She invites your own curiosity as you sink into progressive relaxation and meditation through the use of natural breath mechanics, techniques to ease tension in the body and quiet the mind, and through unexpected approaches to traditional poses to allow you to tune in to your individual experience.

During the second half of the class Bryan will immerse you in a musical sound journey with the crystal singing bowls. Bryan’s unique approach to sound healing incorporates his training in classical music to create a beautiful, flowing soundscape. Every session becomes a brand new composition, designed to help you reach deeper, and deeper states of relaxation, and meditation. This music will guide you on a journey where deep healing, and rest occurs. You will leave the class feeling rejuvenated, restored, and peaceful.

We have developed a tiered payment system for this event. For those of you who can afford to pay on the higher end of the scale, your payment helps to support those who cannot. This is one way to leverage our privilege and stand for equity for everyone. If you cannot pay the higher end suggested, consider what is authentically sustainable for you, and pay that. We are excited to see you all at the event! 100% of the ticket sales will be donated to the nonprofit. Thank you for supporting The Pōpolo Project!

Robin Shepard, Yoga E-RYT200/ RTY500, RCYT, YACEP

Originally a native of the Pacific Northwest, Robin spent the last 13 years traveling, raising her family, and acquiring knowledge and skills living in such places as Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Ho Chi Minh City. Though she will never stop wandering, she now considers Honolulu home. She feels lucky to have been a part of the vibrant yoga culture of Vietnam where she completed her foundational yoga teacher trainings with Suzanne Vian of Yoga Vietnam and her 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training in the FluidUs Method with Carlos Tao. Additionally, Robin is a registered Children’s Yoga Teacher, Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider, and has training in Pre-Natal and Post-Natal yoga.

Accordingly, Robin enjoys teaching both the young and the young-at-heart. As a life-long learner, she is fascinated by recent scientific discoveries around fascia and functional movement and their implications for the practice of yoga. This curiosity has fueled exploration and experimentation to create a style of movement that is playful and dynamic, with practical benefit for everyone from absolute beginners to more advanced practitioners. She is always looking for ways to deliver a more personal experience, with respectful irreverence and fun. She links functional movement skills, breath mechanics, and novel approaches to traditional poses to increase somatic awareness, mobility, and build an organic mind/body connection.

As a long time practitioner, Robin has personally experienced the difference that a regular yoga practice can make in a person’s life. She sees yoga as a doorway, progressing from movement into meditation, awareness, understanding, and finally acceptance of ourselves and others. She considers yoga a powerful and essential practice to help navigate our modern world.
