Hula & Hawaiian Culture
Hula dancing classes in Hawaii. Still & Moving is a wellness and cultural center offering live hula, Hawaiian, oli and ‘ukulele classes in-person & online! Find your ‘ohana!
From wherever you may come, at our wellness and cultural center in Hawaii you experience the genuine kindness and friendship of aloha, one of the fundamental values of Hawaiian culture. We also infuse a deep love of the land, the ‘aina, into all of our choices to live sustainably, in concert with our natural environment. We are fortunate to have a kumu hula, a traditionally trained cultural practitioner, named Mālia Helelā, overseeing every aspect of our Hawaiian cultural program and officiating at special events, both at Still & Moving and in the community.
To deepen your understanding of Hawaii, Kumu Mālia offers fascinating “Walk Story” tours of Waikiki, from which visitors learn the deep cultural significance of the area from a historical perspective. She also introduces visitors to Waimea Valley on the North Shore, where she teaches traditional protocols for entering sacred space, how to make a lei (garland) from fallen leaves, and the cultural significance of the valley. She offers her group the chance to gift their lei at the base of the waterfall, and swim in the water themselves!
Kumu Mālia also offers workshops called Palena sharing traditionally-informed styles of Hawaiian resource management as well as Kāheahea Hawaiian hospitality training.
Born and raised in Hawaii, and a long-time student of hula, Doris Morisaki offers “Aloha Sparkle” to several of our online classes in Japanese, giving students Hawaiian factoids, interesting bits of local history, language and culture.
Folks locally and around the world return again and again to enjoy Hula dancing, Hawaiian chanting, called ‘Oli, Hawaiian ‘Ōlelo (language) for Hula, and ‘Ukulele Strumming.
If you are interested in joining one of our celebrated hula dancing classes in-person or online, contact our Hawaii based wellness and cultural center today to get signed up!
