Although Still & Moving Center is an alcohol-free establishment, we offer this tip that includes suggestions for those who do imbibe.

As the holiday season arrives and the New Year quickly approaches, the excitement of celebrations, gatherings, and festive outings fills the air. With these events come the inevitable indulgences in food and drinks, and a shift from our daily routines, making it challenging to stick to regular fitness and dietary plans.
For many, the holiday season is a time to unwind, relax, and take a well-deserved break from strict routines. However, for those who want to maintain their healthy lifestyle while fully embracing the season’s joy, here are some practical ways to navigate the holidays with balance.
A great starting point is to be mindful of food and drink choices. The holiday season doesn’t mean you need to deprive yourself — it’s okay to savor a delicious meal, enjoy a couple of drinks, and treat yourself to dessert. The key here is moderation.
Making small, intentional choices at parties or family gathering
s can help you stay on track without missing out on the fun. For instance, if I know I’m attending a holiday dinner or party where I can’t predict the menu, I make a plan beforehand.
I might have a small snack, maybe a handful of almonds, a piece of fruit, or a protein shake before I go, so I’m not arriving on an empty stomach and feeling overly tempted by every dish. When I get to the event, I also make sure to drink a full glass of water before diving into cocktails or appetizers. Staying hydrated helps keep cravings in check and supports your overall wellness.
Another approach is to set flexible boundaries. I give myself permission to try foods that aren’t part of my usual diet, embracing holiday flavors and treats that bring joy. At the same time, I make a deal with myself to avoid foods or drinks that I know might make me feel less than great the next day. This way, I’m enjoying the season without overindulgence.
I also remind myself not to be too hard on myself if I stray a bit from my usual routine
. After all, the holiday season is a time to celebrate, so a few deviations from the norm are completely natural.
I want to head into January feeling energized and motivated, not weighed down or discouraged. Keeping up with some of my healthy habits helps me feel better overall and makes it easier to transition back to my regular routine. It’s all about finding a rhythm that works.
Maintaining a regular exercise routine duringthe holidays can also present its own challenges, especially if you’re traveling or hosting guests. If you’re staying close to home, you may be able to stick to your usual workout schedule. However, when you’re on the road, keeping up with fitness can be more challenging without access to familiar equipment and spaces.
If your goal is to stay active while traveling, take a little time to scope out the fitness options available in your destination. Many areas have gyms, yoga or Pilates studios and some facilities offer day passes. Still & Moving Center stays open through most of the holiday season. Local parks can offer a great place for a brisk walk or jog. Hotels often provide workout rooms and pools.
