Saturday, October 14, 2023
8:00 am – around 2:30 pm HST
(Meet at Still & Moving Center)

A Free community event

Charity means personal exertion for others; personal mercy and kindness; personal interest in the welfare of those who suffer; personal sympathy, forethought and assistance in their troubles or needs.”  – Helena Blavatsky

Join us and community leader Blanche McMillan – an amazing champion of community uplift – for an inspired day of connecting to share food, supplies, and cheer to our house-less brothers and sisters around the island. Auntie Blanche is the founder of Hui Mahi’ai ‘Āina, a tiny house village in Waimanalo for folks transitioning out of homelessness. You can read more about Auntie Blanche and her tiny house village below.

Still & Moving Center Members initiated this event by suggesting that we organize opportunities to support the community, especially those less fortunate than ourselves. Without the wherewithal to travel to Maui to support fire victims, we are instead caravaning to support the needy on our own island.

As a preparatory event, Blanche has also invited us to come out to Hui Mahi’ai ‘Āina in Waimanalo on Friday, October 13 to help prepare the meals we will hand out on Saturday.

Schedule for Saturday, October 14

8:00 am Meet at Still & Moving Center lobby (arrive early to get coffee or tea from PeleKai Coffee!)

8:15 am Caravan to Salvation Army, downtown to meet Blanche, her fellow community leaders, and Hui Mahi’ai ‘Āina friends.

8:30 am – 4:00 or 5:00 pm Distribution with Blanche and friends of brown bag lunches and supplies around the island.

Together we will caravan to:

    • Iwalei (Salvation Army, 322 Sumner St, Honolulu): 100+ recipients
    • Chinatown (River Street): About 10 recipients
    • Mapunapuna (Nimitz): 50 – 75 recipients
    • Waianae Harbor: 320 recipients

At each stop, some of us will set up distribution tables, while others together greet our friends living in tents, cars, etc.

Feel free to carpool with one another to make parking easier at each stop.

This event was conceived of and initiated by members of Still & Moving Center. See here  about how you could become a Member and help bring community-lifting events to life.

Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.” Pema Chõdrōn
